i'm michelle griego. major disruptions today at e >> your realtime captioner: linda marie macdonald. good afternoon. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm michelle griego. major disruptions today at the bay area's biggest port. striking janitors and maintenance workers at the port of oakland have been blocking access for trucks and longshoremen all morning. cbs 5 reporter elissa harrington is in oakland with more. >> reporter: hi there. that's right. well, it's very quiet here at the port. there are still a couple of picketers behind me but all the longshoremen have been told to go home. all the truckers have also left. even though a port spokesman will not tell me that the port has officially been shut down, the union workers i talked to say the strike was a success.

two picket lines in oakland one at the port one at oakland international airport, more than 200 workers with the local service employees international union are on a 24-hour strike upset that port executives want to cut wages and benefits and can't come to an agreement with the union. >> we have been without a contract over 16 months, that's not right. >> reporter: they shut down the port to make a statement to the executives. >> they haven't been honest, they haven't been negotiating in good faith. >> reporter: by the middle of the day no one was able to get in or out of the terminal. picketers covered all gates. on a typical day, the port loads about 10,000 trucks. many drivers were upset to lose a day's pay. >> none of us can make a living today. this is how we make our living, by pulling our freight out of here and delivering it to the customers. >> i'm losing $600. >> reporter: isaac with the port says the maritime area alone generates $8 million of economic activity per day.

>> any disruption to that is a negative impact on this whole region's economy. >> reporter: he says the port is facing serious financial challenges and while they do want to continue the conversation with the union -- >> we have to address financial sustainability across the board. we have $1.3 billion in debt, $850 million in unfunded pension and capital budget needs, that's nearly $2 billion in outstanding liabilities. >> reporter: striking employees don't buy it especially after learning some port executives are under investigation for alleged improper spending. >> they want to take 15% of our wages because they say there's not enough money, yet i see they are spending money on entertainment, strip clubs and what not. we just want a fair contract. >> reporter: workers hope this strike brings the port executives back to the bargaining table with their union. they say if that doesn't happen, they will be back out here again until it does. elissa harrington, cbs 5.

this is my hospital. i have been here for 30 years. so when nurses are striking there's' definite problem within the hospital. >> nurses are on strike today at 10 bay area hospitals. the key issues include staffing levels and whether nurses can have paid sick leave. the walkout is planned for two days at eight sutter hospitals and for today only at two hospitals in san jose run by another company. replacement nurses have been brought in. we are following breaking news. cal football coach jeff tedford has been fired. athletic director sandy barber will hold a news conference to discuss his dismissal at 3 p.m. today. cal went 3-9 in the first year back at a renovated memorial stadium. and the final two games were lopsided losses to oregon and oregon state where the bears gave up 100-plus points. cbs 5's sports director dennis o'donnell tells us that cal is targeting hue jackson as a replacement. the former raiders head coach who coached at cal back in the

'90s just keep tuned to cbs 5 for the latest on this developing story. we're conducting these surgical operations against terrorists at a time when our own population is being bombarded by rocket attacks. >> rockets rained down in gaza for the 7th straight day but a cease-fire may be hours away. hamas leaders say they have reached a truce but israel says, quote, it's not there yet. once thought to be too far away for the range of the hamas rockets, air raid sirens sounded in jerusalem today. students scrambled to take cover outside a school. the people on the street took shelter wherever they could the missile missed the city, landing in an open field outside the walls. police say it was one of about 95 that was launched from gaza on tuesday. several cars were hit but no casualties were reported. while in gaza, meanwhile, an israeli strike damaged the islamic national bank and though israel is targeting hamas leaders, dozens of

civilians have been killed in the deadly crossfire. now, the united states is stepping up its involvement in the peace process. president obama is sending his secretary of state hillary clinton to the region. and danielle nottingham is standing by in washington, d.c. to tell us who the secretary will be meeting with later today. danielle. >> reporter: frank, secretary clinton will be meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and then tomorrow she is supposed to sit down with egypt's president. and it's really important for secretary clinton to do her best to try to broker some kind of peace deal along with the rest of the international community. they are very concerned about the violence spilling into other areas of the region and we know right now it's very volatile there not only in what's happening in israel and in gaza but also in syria and egypt and in lebanon, frank. >> now, the u.s. government has a strong stand against hamas. so who will meet with the hamas

leaders to broker the peace deal? >> reporter: that's egypt's president right now. mohamed morsi has been meeting with hamas. of course, the united states won't sit down with hamas leaders because they have not renounced terrorism. so that complicates the situation even further. but egypt has stepped up to try to broker this peace deal. there was word that there would be an announcement of some type of temporary truce a 24-hour cooling-off period this afternoon. we haven't heard anything yet. but the international community scrambling right now at this hour to try to find a way to stop these air strikes, frank. >> very difficult decision or situation over there. okay, danielle, thank you for that live report. four men are under arrest in an alleged terror plot busted in southern california. the fbi says the men conspired to kill americans overseas and in the u.s. and planned to join al qaeda and the taliban. one suspect is a 34-year-old man who served in the us air force in 2000 and 2001. authorities say he tried to

arrange for two california men to meet his contacts with terror organizations. hewlett-packard's 4th quarter losses are in the billions today. the palo alto-based company purchased british software maker autonomy for $11 billion last year but says the company had misrepresented its finances and is valued now at $8.8 billion. this is the second consecutive quarter of losses for the tech giant. friday, their stock hit an all- time low since 2002. today pg&e posted a reward of $10,000 related to a kidnapping. one of the alleged abductors is seen here trying to withdraw money from the victim's atm account. the contract employee for pg&e was abducted in a parking lot in walnut creek earlier this month. she was released that same night in the oakland hills. anyone with information is urged to call walnut creek police. a man was struck and killed on caltrain tracks in palo alto this morning. it happened about 5:30 when a northbound train hit the man at

the charleston avenue crossing. no one on the train was hurt. tapes that were stopped in both directions for a short -- trains were stopped in both directions for a short time causing delays. crews in redwood city have cleaned up two water main breaks today, one 8" at brewster and warren street. firefighters pumped out water and the main was capped. couple of hours later a second one broke a few blocks away. pittsburg had a water main break. the water was pumped out, the pipe was replaced. no homes were flood. the water is now back on. a priest at a san jose catholic school has resigned after defending a registered sex offenders presence on their campus. mark gurries was volunteering at saint francis cabrini last month when he was recognized and security was alerted. he produced a letter from the

san jose diocese saying he was allowed to be there and that claim was defended by the parish priest. but the letter wasn't written or signed by the proper church officials. the bishop in charge of the diocese has apologized and tells the parishioners it won't happen again. well, the man behind elmo has resigned after allegations of sexual assault. sesame workshop says kevin clash is leaving because the controversy is a distraction. this week a second victim filed a lawsuit claiming clash sexually abused him starting back at the age of 15. earlier this month the first victim accused him of an inappropriate relationship while he was a teenager and then recanted the story. coming up, experts say not every toy out there should end up in santa's sleigh. >> so parents listen up. you might want to check the holiday shopping list once and then twice after the break more information on the most deadly toys that are currently on the shows us.

not everything on store shes is safe. black friday is this week and people are getting a jump start on the holiday shopping but not everything on the shelves is safe. cbs 5 reporter cate caugiran is live in san francisco with a surprising list of dangerous toys being shoulder right now. >> reporter: what's surprising is these toys can be found anywhere whether it's a big box

store or a dollar store. so experts are telling parents now before you cash in on those holiday deals, you might want to make sure you do your homework first. take a look, we got a glimpse of some of the toys that made the bad list for the california public interest research group or calpirg. it was part of the 27th annual trouble in toyland report. the group selected about 200 toys at random and found dangerous if not deadly aspects in half of them. now doctors are calling on parents to pay careful attention before selecting their gifts so that holiday celebrations can stay at home instead of the emergency room. >> i don't think parents realize the risk when they purchase these for either their own use or for a teenager to use. they are fun but they can cause serious risk in children who might ingest them. >> we go to big retail stores such as toys 'r us and target and smaller kind of family

owned toy shops. and we find problems in both types of stores. >> reporter: calpirg categorized the dangers into four areas. choking, toxic, noise and magnetic hazard. they displayed different toys as examples of each. the organization called for stricter regulations on the toy industry so that these types of toys never see our shelves. calpirg has been able to recall about 150 toys as a result of their annual report. they say they will continue to keep a close eye on toys as newer ones hit the market. live in san francisco, cate caugiran, cbs 5. >> thank you. and if you have some extra money to spend after the holiday, maybe you might want to help out the national debt. you can actually donate to the bureau of public debt to help pay down that $16 trillion u.s. credit card bill. before you laugh, so far, a lot of americans have actually done it. they have donated $8 million to the cause thus far. congress had to pass a law back in the '60s to allow such

[ laughter ] >> we have showers around the bay area. most of that light showers early on. but still, i think things are going to be picking up. high-def doppler radar showing you a good band of moisture off the coastline and one that's just making its way into the north bay now so if you are traveling in that direction, along 101, watch out it has been on and off all day long especially north of the golden gate bridge. but the main event is still yet to come located a little further to the north. outside though it looks ominous. a lot of gray skies out there right now. the temperatures not too bad. 66 degrees really mild in concord. 63 in san francisco. and 63 also in san jose. but we have some broken clouds looking toward mount diablo. not too bad. a lot of low-level moisture

with the warm frontal stuff coming onshore now. the main event is still yet to come. rain likely tonight and that's when that cold front is likely to move in but it's going to be a quick mover so dry weather after tonight and it looks like dry weather for the holiday but here's your cold front hung up to the north. it will take its time working its way into our direction. behind that high pressure is going to nudge in here. but carry that umbrella today especially north of the golden gate bridge. the showers are going to be more numerous and rain picking up in the afternoon. so let's roll you forward through the afternoon. that cold front dragging into the bay area so the evening commute will be wet especially in the north bay. it takes a long time to get to the bay area about 11 p.m. and then sagging to the south as we head in toward tomorrow morning. maybe a couple of leftover showers and then we clear out your skies. rainfall amounts maybe upwards of a half inch or so in some of the wetter parts of the north bay. otherwise lesser amounts into san jose but still a nice soaking once again. temperatures expected into the 60s. next couple of days we are going to dry things out and

warm things up into the holiday in fact nice weather as we head in toward saturday and sunday. the official thanksgiving forecast, lots of sunshine, no threat of rain, some mild conditions into the 60s. good day to get out and enjoy it. >> we might give you the day off? >> i don't think so. today's tip of the day is with pearl onions. for the holidays and for so many different recipes pearl onions so great you peel the outer part of it and you put it into the pan. that's all you have to do. you roast something put them in the bottom so it absorbs the juices. they are fantastic! loaded with flavor. and like a sponge, they absorb flavor. but you have to select them and
